The Story
The life of this E36 Touring began on November 30th, 1996, when it rolled off the production line. Just days later, on December 3rd, 1996, it was delivered to the German BMW dealership Buder-Hubatsch in Weisswasser. From the factory, it was a uniquely spec’d slicktop, M Sport, manual transmission car, finished in Techno-Violett Metallic (299) with a black leather interior and patterned cloth inserts.
For years, this Touring served as a daily driver, enduring countless snowy winters which left its mark in the form of rust.
Then it was time Sean, an E36 lover with a vision. After a brief phone call with Coen, CEO of Moton Suspension, where he described this unicorn spec of an E36 touring, Coen immediately recognized the car and knew of one close by. After some conversations, Sean was able to secure it. The Touring remained at Coen’s home in the Netherlands until it reached 25 years old, making it eligible for import into the U.S. While waiting, Sean spent time gathering new old stock (NOS) and aftermarket parts to restore the Touring to its former glory.
Once the car arrived stateside, it went straight onto a lift—where it sat waiting for its time to shine.
With 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of the BMW 3 Series, Sean knew the timing was perfect to begin the restoration. The Touring was sent to Samuels Auto Body, where it underwent a glass-out, bare-metal respray. The interior, door trims, and lights were all removed to ensure a flawless paint job.
Once the paintwork was complete, the chassis returned to our main Oviedo location for assembly. This was when the rust damage became apparent. Years of exposure to harsh winters had taken its toll. The subframes, arms, brake calipers, and undercarriage were all in rough shape. But Sean and the team had planned for this.
-
Fully reinforced and powder-coated front and rear subframes were installed.
-
All new suspension arms and a complete brake assembly were fitted.
-
The Moton 1-Way Coilovers replaced the worn factory struts.
-
The factory BMW Contours made way for silver 17-inch BBS E87s.
-
Every single bushing was replaced with Powerflex bushings.
-
The rear stock exhaust was upgraded to a Supersprint rear section.
-
Every nut and bolt removed was either restored or replaced with brand-new OEM components.
By the time the undercarriage was complete, the Touring’s underbody looked just as perfect as its fresh paint.
With the exterior complete, our attention turned to the interior. A fully custom violet interior was handcrafted by a team member from Brabus. Yes, that Brabus. The interior also featured
-
A NOS M-Tech 2 steering wheel
-
A fully redone Alcantara headliner with A-, B-, and C-pillars to match
-
A ZHP shift knob
With the exterior and interior complete, the stock M52 engine received a full maintenance service and fine-tuning, ensuring it was ready for whatever lay ahead... until the swap happens. 😏
We’ll be dropping the full build series on this touring in the coming weeks and showcasing it at our booth at this year’s Bimmer Invasion.
